Australian Curriculum: History - courses of study

The Australian Colonies - Swan River Colony
The development of the Swan River region of Western Australia began with a visit by Captain James Stirling in 1827.
This course explores the settlement of the region between 1827 and the 1890s within the context of British colonial expansion, the lives of free settlers, some significant people of the time and the impact on Aboriginal people.
This course has been written to meet the requirements of the Australian Curriculum: History. Skills are gained through historical inquiry of the settlement of the Swan River Colony. The course is developed to suit students of year 5 level.

Year 7 Investigating The Ancient Past (Ancient Australia)
A Depth Study using the Burrup Peninsula as an Inquiry. This course has been written specifically to meet requirements for the Australian Curriculum: History. The course explores how we know about the ancient past and what legacies are left of ancient societies.

Year 11 Stage 1A/2A Modern History The Burrup and Beyond – 40 000 years of Local History.
This course relates specifically to the region around the Burrup Peninsula and is supported with reference materials and recognised by the WA Curriculum Council. It  explores the conflict between the heritage values and ancient history (the rock art/ petroglyphs) of the place and the sustainablity of the changing landscape.

Reminiscence Boxes and Conversation Cards
Bring the past to life in your classroom. Themed Boxes contain artefacts with lesson plan suggestions and questions to begin conversations. Boxes can be used for such occasions as a special school event (eg Grandparents Day), as a way of introducing Time, Continuity and Change in the classroom or in conjunction with a visit to a National Trust property.

Tour Through Time  CDs
A series of CD resources and classroom activities to use in conjunction with visits to some National Trust places and other WA heritage sites for primary and secondary use.

Tour Through Time Webquest   
With heritage as a central theme and using Western Australian history as a base, teachers are able to engage students in a variety of fun activities. The curriculum linked activities in the Webquest relate to Tranby, The Old Mill and East Perth Cemeteries. They are suitable for primary students and relate to the Tour Through Time CD resources to supplement teaching and learning programmes.

Golden Pipeline Resources and Activities File
   
This reference file gives concise photo-copiable information about the background, map, chronology and key players of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. It has sections with teaching suggestions, activities and curriculum links for early and middle childhood as well as a comprehensive bibliography. Download a pdf example page.

Published by Fremantle Press, this delightful picture book is a lively celebration of the legendary CY O'Connor's gigantic endeavour to build the pipeline from Mundaring Weir to the Kalgoorlie goldfields. It can be purchased through the National Trust or good bookshops. Teachers notes are available

Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail Guide  
This illustrated guide unlocks the rich heritage and bushland that can be found along the 650km trail from Mundaring to Kalgoorlie. Available through the National Trust or WA Tourism outlets.
