BIRD BOXES
An in-school Community Service program

The National Trust of Australia (WA) is developing a community service project for year 10 -11 students that will help to support native bird populations by installing nesting boxes at selected sites on, or close to, the school grounds.

Participating schools will be provided with the resources and information to carry out population surveys, identify suitable sites, build and install nesting boxes and undertake ongoing population monitoring. The pilot project is being implemented in 2008 and will be extended to additional schools in future years.

The project aims to:
Develop students’ sense of social and environmental responsibility;
Develop students’ practical and technological skills;
Develop students’ monitoring and recording skills;
Collect quality data to provide a picture of bird populations in the area;
Develop a model for implementation in other Western Australian schools.
